Journey to the Underworld # 0311

The first version of this painting was inspired by the paintings in the Egyptian section of the MET and I invoked their antiquity with similar color and forms.
I am a colorist so it was easy to get the color that was there in the MET watercolours but since I am a modern artist I was not satisfied with this copy. When the remoteness became obvious I changed the color of this painting into a silvery white so as to present a modernized version of ancient antiquity.
When I saw the photographs of these two versions I thought the red looked better - more colorful - but now I prefer the bolder simpler forms created by the silvery white. I took away the pleasure sensation of attractive colors to make the forms stand out. The forms are now clearer and stronger.
