This site is
devoted to the life and works of the Indian artist Mohan Samant who
came to New York in 1959.
Painting
Five galleries show 50
years of painting from 1950 to 2000. The early works show the influence
of Samant's training in Indian miniature painting as well as the European
style taught at art school. His works of the 1960's show the influence
of his travels in Europe and his living in New York City at the height
of the abstract expressionists.
Most paintings
can be seen in three different sizes: thumbnail, medium size which
is accompanied by the information about the painting and a large size
which allows the viewer to see in detail the subtleties of the different
techniques used. Clicking on an image will take the viewer to the
next size. Clicking on the large size will return the viewer to the
previous page.
Paintings of
the 21st century can be seen in the Exhibition
page and the Highlights section. The
Exhibition page shows works for sale. The Highlights section began
in August, 2000 and a new page is added from time to time. Not only
paintings but the artist's thoughts about the work can be found here.
Each Highlight is a new surprise. In the Studio
displays photographs of the artist working in the studio and the current
painting as it is being worked on.
